Facebook’s Currency Libra: Monetary Challenges

Facebook has 2.7bn users and 90mn companies operating on its various platforms. Perhaps more than any other non-state player, it has the resources, reach and data trove to launch a global currency. The networking and social media giant is also loathed by many critics, who accuse it of abusing its market dominance. Hence, it is notable that Facebook is leading an association of companies that will co-manage the new currency and payments system as partners. It is a less than reprehensible plan, but there is a mountain to climb if Libra is to emerge as a new form of money.

This report will focus on what Libra must do if it is to become a widely-used medium of exchange. It will not judge if Facebook and its Libra grouping can develop payment services like Paypal, Venmo or Wepay; it won’t address  whether Facebook will roll out rivals to Blackrock’s exchange traded funds or Alipay’s gigantic Chinese money market fund. With or without Libra being a success, Facebook could end up competing in all these areas—after all, none of the above providers have also created the holy grail of money.

What is certain is that if the new Libra were to be launched as a regular  investment product, it would bomb. It may resemble a money market fund, except that the manager bags all accrued interest and the investor gets stuck with any value changes. On this basis, Blackrock or Goldman Sachs would likely fancy their chances against Libra.

Libra is, in fact, competing with central banks. Its model is to issue new Libra units and buy interest-bearing government bills from markets such as the US, UK, Germany and Japan. The fact that it may first exchange Libras for dollars, euros and yen, before buying the instruments does not change the basic proposition. It is similar to a central bank that scoops up safe interest-bearing assets using money that it has created out of thin air.

However, becoming a quasi central bank without government support will be hard. Users must be convinced to use the new currency in preference to the “legal tender” required by government agencies for a range of transactions.

Barbarians at the gate

Libra’s backers may be able to persuade regulators that they offer the requisite consumer protections and safeguards. They may even be able to automate the reporting of all capital gains and losses for tax purposes. But this does not mean that governments will meekly accept competition in the currency game. After all, if demand for fiat money shifts to Libra, the value of “old money”, when measured in goods and services, will fall. To avoid an inflation spiral, the responsible central bank will have to contract the supply of fiat money to match the now reduced demand. This will mean the central bank shrinking its own balance sheet, and likely pressuring its member banks to do the same thing (via monetary policy tightening).

Governments will be unnerved by this squeezing of their central banks since seigniorage profits—earned by the central bank issuing money at little or no cost and buying interest-paying assets—usually flows into state coffers. In the case of Libra, this same “money for free” will get distributed to the 100 members of the Libra Association, and not to the government.

Central and commercial banks buy lots of local-currency debt, especially paper issued by their own governments. Libra’s backers will buy similar government paper as backing for its units. However, because this group has promised to diversify across trusted currencies and government issuers, it will end up holding less US government paper than traditional US banks.

Still, if Uncle Sam does not love the Libra idea, other governments are likely to hate it—especially those in developing economies since the Libra Association is not likely to buy much of their public debt.

Take India, which has a history of currency debasement from unruly inflation. Any capital flight out of Indian banks is likely to see the authorities quickly stamp on Libra. And how precisely will they block a crypto-currency? Easy. They will just tell Facebook, Uber, Visa, Mastercard and the rest of the Libra Association that unless they desist with this currency nuisance, their main businesses will be excluded from India’s burgeoning consumer market.

But will users want to use Libra?

Still, regulators aside, will Libra be attractive to users? After all, the basic point of any currency is that it must be desired not just by a few people, but by many. The race to become money is the ultimate winner-takes-all contest; it is the most marketable “good” in an economy—the one that can be most readily and reliably traded for other goods, services and assets.

In each country or currency block, one currency typically dominates—and it is almost always the one needed by people to pay taxes. For some, this is a core reason to be skeptical about bitcoin’s chances of ever becoming money. Using two currencies is always more hassle than just one. And since fiat currencies will remain a necessary holding, at least to pay taxes, Libra has to give users good reasons for the hassle it creates.

The Libra Association promises to (i) provide banking to the “unbanked”, and (ii) offer lower transaction costs and faster settlements. At this point, it is not clear why Libra will succeed where existing financial institutions have failed. Is it because of new tech and/or greater scale and global reach? Or will Libra allow users to cut corners on “know your customer” rules and so cut costs for banking services? If it is the latter, then regulators’ revenge could be swift.

A question of value

Even if it proves a poor store of value in the long run, money must have low volatility over the short to medium term and a small chance of suddenly collapsing. bitcoin has so far failed both tests. Its value is very volatile, and there is always the fear/hope that a better crypto-currency may come along leaving dawdlers with a worthless stash of digital tokens. For these reasons, bitcoin has had the characteristics of a great speculative asset, but has never progressed to becoming anything resembling money.

In contrast, US dollar cash, which has lost half its real value since 1990, has proved a fairly awful investment. Yet at the same time, the dollar has been good as “money” since its value has been stable in the short to medium term, and no collapses in value have occurred.

Near-term stability is key as it allows a currency to act as a standard of value and to facilitate price comparisons. For example, the user can compare the price paid on a good last week, with the price offered by someone else today. If the price of money is soaring or plunging week-to-week, or even year-to-year, then more stable money will be sought after.

So how does Libra do on my key money checklist? Better than bitcoin and bolivars. But arguably not as well as US dollars, euros or even rupees.

Since Libra is backed by short-term assets issued by reputable governments and central banks, it should not face the “greater fool” problem of holders hitting the exits in a panic. So long as assets in the Libra reserve do not collapse, then, unlike bitcoin, it should weather market vicissitudes.

There is always a chance that Libra’s corporate backers get greedy by buying higher-yielding assets that have the potential to implode in the manner of sub-prime mortgage assets in 2008. After all, it is this group which earns the income, so arguably there is an agency-type problem. Still, at the outset, the Libra will be backed by assets that should be safe and liquid. Hence, there are reasons to treat it as credible.

Libra’s volatility problem

Libra’s backing means it should not suffer price volatility like bitcoin, but it is likely to be more changeable than most fiat currencies. For starters, a diversified asset base does not ensure price stability in real-term. Libra’s backers plan to anchor it to a basket of major currencies, like the International Monetary Fund’s quasi-currency, the Special Drawing Rights. The SDR’s problem is that it has proven more volatile than individual fiat currencies.

Price variations in US dollar cash are captured by the US CPI, which measures the prices of US consumer goods and services in US dollar terms. Since 1990, its annual variations have been between 0% and 5%, and the number has often been close to the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. This has made price comparisons and economic calculations in US dollars fairly easy. Hence, dollars have made for decently good money.

By contrast, a US consumer who chose to diversify his or her cash holdings and use SDRs as money would have experienced much larger fluctuations in the real value of their money. SDR inflation rates (repricing the US CPI in SDR) have since 1990 regularly fluctuated between -10% and 10%.

Perhaps more surprisingly, Libra may offer no stability advantages over major developing economies. When investors do the same test for India—perhaps the biggest potential market for Libra—a similar picture emerges. The SDR may have held its value better than the rupee in the long run, but as already noted that is not the main thing with money. Even the rupee has displayed less price volatility than the SDR (see second pane of the chart below).

The relative stability of local currency versus the SDR shows that most central banks have been pretty good at targeting low and steady inflation—at least since 1990. When foreign monetary policy is imported, as in the case of SDR usage, the consumer must accept more volatile prices. As a real world example, Hong Kong’s CPI is more volatile than most countries, in part because it imports US monetary policy—which has been set to achieve stable US consumer prices, not stable Hong Kong consumer prices. Hong Kong people accept higher price volatility because they have to. The Hong Kong dollar is the fiat currency that is effectively imposed on the population by the government. By contrast, the Libra Association is asking consumers to willingly adopt a more volatile currency.

So given these dynamics, will prices be set in Libra? Probably not during the adoption phase, and perhaps not ever. As the service is rolled out, vendors like Uber will likely quote two prices when showing a fare—the local fiat price, and a Libra price which is a conversion of a fiat price.

Even if only Libra prices are quoted, this is likely to be a conversion of an internally set fiat price. After all, companies will still have fiat-denominated costs for the foreseeable future (taxes at least). So long as the Libra price is a conversion of fiat prices, it is likely to fluctuate more like the SDR price index shown above than the relatively stable fiat price indexes shown.

Hence, if governments do not shut down a competitor to their own “legal tender”, it is not clear that Libra will be attractive to users given the hassle of handling multiple currencies, paying capital gains taxes on all transactions, and dealing in an inherently more volatile currency. So why bother with Libra? We worry that users and governments may not.

? What drove Vitalik Buterin to decentralization (according to his dad)

Growing up in liberal Canada, Vitalik Buterin—co-founder of the world’s second biggest blockchain, Ethereum—was never allowed to forget his Soviet heritage.

Canada is obviously a far cry from Soviet Russia. But it does have strong socialist tendencies, as Dmitry Buterin told early bitcoin adopter Jeff Berwick, in a recent interview. In the video clip, Buterin senior explains that his heritage was key to helping the would-be-entrepreneur look to alternative ways of organising people and ideas, that would ultimately lead him to blockchain.

The father of the 25-year-old boy-genius, Dmitry Buterin, 46, is from oil-rich Chechnya—a region which suffered some of the worst atrocities committed in Russia’s long, authoritarian past.

Buterin senior studied computer science in Moscow before turning serial entrepreneur. He emigrated with his family to Canada, when Vitalik was six, settling in Toronto. But the Soviet experience, during his formative years, has naturally stayed with him.

? SEC-Registered Clearing House Brings Crypto Trading to 5 Million Clients

American financial clearing and execution company Apex Clearing and its crypto investment subsidiary Apex Crypto have launched a new trading platform for broker-dealers and financial advisors to help their clients trade crypto more effectively.

According to a June 27 press release announcing the new broker-integrated Apex Crypto platform, equity investors will be able to seamlessly open and fund new crypto trading accounts “within minutes” — rather than the purported weeks it would usually take clients to do so.

Founded in 2012, Apex Clearing is an SEC-registered and FINRA member digital wealth management firm owned by American financial services company PEAK6 Investments LLC.

? US Lawmakers Question Terrorist Use of Facebook Cryptocurrency

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives questioned Financial Crime Enforcement Network (FinCEN) director Kenneth Blanco about Facebook’s planned cryptocurrency Thursday.

Representatives Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), Trey Hollingsworth (R-IN), Bill Foster (D-IL) and French Hill (R-AR) held a briefing with members of the House Financial Services Committee, discussing the Libra project with Blanco, who heads up FinCEN, the U.S. Treasury Department’s anti-money-laundering wing.

The briefing was held as part of a broader look at how machine learning and artificial intelligence can limit illicit money laundering and related activities.

? A Wannabe Netflix Raised $575 Million on Ethereum – Then Ditched Crypto

What started as a $575 million token sale is now a rewards program for watching videos.

TaTaTu’s initial coin offering (ICO) was among the biggest of 2018, with film producer Andrea Iervolino raising money from royals like Lady Monika Bacardi, of the famous liquor family. Before this raise, Iervolino was best known for films such as “Bernie The Dolphin” and “Finding Steve McQueen.”

As some token sales start to slowly yield results, TaTaTu offers a prime example of a platform that used “blockchain” as a fundraising technique and then largely moved on.

The TaTaTu project, originally meant to offer a publicly traded cryptocurrency associated with a media streaming platform similar to Netflix, once attracted investment from Ari Paul’s BlockTower Capital (which declined to comment for this article) and movie stars like Johnny Depp (whose representatives did not respond to requests for comment).

? Ethereum Classic Devs Building a ‘Chainhopping’ Bridge Between ETH and ETC

San Francisco-based incubator for the blockchain Ethereum Classic (ETC), ETC Labs, has announced that it has partnered with cryptocurrency firm Metronome to create a solution for Ethereum (ETH)/ETC interoperability, in an official blog post on June 27.

Per the announcement, blockchain interoperability—also referred to as “chainhopping”—is a property of a blockchain asset meaning that it can be transferred between separate blockchains. In this case, the cryptocurrency Metronome (MET) will be transferable between the ETH and ETC blockchains.

The ETH and ETC blockchains initially split in the summer of 2016 after a contentious vote to return money lost when The DAO collapsed in 2016.

Yesterday I was saying that sentence :
” What else to say… imagine now that the BTC will correct, I’m quiet sure that we will break very easly all our support lines. “

Unfortunatly I was more that correct as we are breaking support lines after support lines on the STEEM. It is almost the case on every altcoins but again STEEM is one of the best in correction matter as we didn’t do any up or almost any up during the BTC run but now we are even correcting more than the average of altcoins. What to say… let’s wait better time and hope support line at 0.34$ will hold.

? Ethereum Tokens to Trade on Swiss Stock Exchange via R3 Tech

Public blockchain tokens will soon be trading on a major securities exchange.

Revealed exclusively to CoinDesk, Swiss security token firm BlockState plans to “passport” half a dozen ERC-20 tokens from ethereum, the second-largest public blockchain, to Corda, the private distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform developed by R3.

Before the end of the year, the tokens will be locked up in a smart contract on ethereum and “mirrored” versions of them will run on Corda. This is akin to global depository receipts, where shares of a company are held in custody in one country and a certificate representing ownership of them is traded in another.

? It’s Now Harder to Mine Bitcoin Than Ever Before

Bitcoin mining has become competitive than ever.

Bitcoin mining difficulty – the measure of how hard it is to earn mining rewards in the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market cap – has reached a new record high above 7.93 trillion. That’s a seven percent jump from the 7.45 trillion record set during the recent two-week adjustment cycle, which was the highest since October 2018.

Bitcoin is designed to adjust its mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks (approximately 14 days), based on the amount of computing power deployed to the network. This is done to ensure the block production interval at the next period will remain constant at around every 10 minutes. When there are fewer machines racing to solve math problems to earn the next payout of newly created bitcoin, difficulty falls; when there are more computers in the game, it rises.

? Buried in Facebook’s Libra White Paper, a Digital Identity Bombshell

The Takeaway

Facebook’s Libra white paper includes a brief but potentially seismic nod to digital identity standards.

With 2 billion users worldwide, Facebook may be able to succeed where others have failed in jump-starting a globally accepted digital ID.

Some identity experts say this is even more important than the cryptocurrency, but others question how much control Libra would give users and find its approach overbearing.

? Bitcoin Falls by $1,400 After Crash of Major Crypto Exchange Coinbase

Bitcoin’s (BTC) price fell by $1,400 within minutes after a crash of United States-based cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase.

Coinbase first reported that it was investigating an issue in which its API and website were not functioning properly at 1:47 p.m. PDT on its status website

? Singaporean Exchange Bitrue Gets Hacked, Losing $5 Million in XRP, Cardano

Singapore-based crypto exchange Bitrue has suffered a major hack, losing 9.3 million XRP and 2.5 million cardano (ADA) from its hot wallet. The news was revealed in an official statement from the exchange published as a twitter thread on June 26.

At the time of the breach — 1 a.m. GMT+8 June 27 — the stolen funds would have been worth over $4.5 million in XRP (valued at $0.488) and $237,500 in ADA (valued at $0.095), according to CoinMarketCap data.

The exchange states that a purportedly single hacker first “exploited a vulnerability in our Risk Control team’s 2nd review process to access the personal funds of about 90 Bitrue users,” subsequently using this first experience to access the exchange’s hot wallet and steal the cryptocurrency.

? Bitcoin Hits 17-Month High Above $12.9k

Views:

Bitcoin (BTC) rose above $12,900 for the first time in over 17 months backed by consistent levels of volume.

Recent price action could set scope for $13,700 in the coming day on the back of strong bullish momentum.

The hourly chart reveals extreme levels of volatility presenting harsh trading conditions for the average trader.

? CFTC Approves LedgerX to Settle Futures in Real Bitcoin

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has cleared bitcoin derivatives provider LedgerX to offer physically settled bitcoin futures contracts.

The CFTC said Tuesday it had approved LedgerX’s application for a designated contract market (DCM) license, meaning the company can now offer the new futures contracts. LedgerX is the second company to receive approval to offer physically settled bitcoin futures; other firms, such as Intercontinental Exchange’s Bakkt, Seed CX and ErisX plan to enter this market. (While Bakkt’s own futures contracts have been self-certified, the firm is waiting for the New York Department of Financial Services to license its warehouse).

Unlike the cash-settled bitcoin futures listed by the Chicago exchanges Cboe and CME, in physically settled futures the buyer receives the underlying commodity when a contract expires, rather than the fiat equivalent.

? Bitcoin Market Dominance Climbs to Over 60% – Highest in Over 2 Years

Bitcoin’s (BTC) parabolic advance over $12,000 has taken its market dominance above 60% for the first time since April 2017, data from CoinMarketCap confirmed on June 26.

Following its rapid appreciation in recent days, the bitcoin price reached levels not seen since immediately after the end of its 2017 bull run.

The successes have come at the expense of altcoins, which have so far failed to produce similar performance. As a result, BTC dominance of the overall cryptocurrency market cap is now 62% – more than at any time in the past two years.

? What Indonesia Reveals About Facebook’s Libra Plan

Facebook published plans for the Libra cryptocurrency in seven languages, including Indonesia’s Bahasa – a move that offers perhaps the clearest glimpse of what Facebook’s fintech ascent might look like.

“Indonesia has the fourth-highest number of Facebook users in the world,” Pang Xue Kai, co-founder of the Indonesian crypto exchange Tokocrypto, told CoinDesk. “If Facebook’s Libra can address the [local] issues, it has the potential to succeed.”

According to the annual media report released by We Are Social and Hootsuite, Indonesia has the world’s highest rate of Facebook post engagement among internet users, over 4 percent, and the highest frequency of online shopping, with 86 percent of Indonesian survey respondents saying they bought something online in the past month.

? Walmart China Will Track Food in Supply Chain with Vechain’s Thor Blockchain

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, will officiate the 2019 Africa Blockchain Conference, according to a report by Kabuubi Media Africa on June 24

According to the report, The 2019 Africa Blockchain Conference — not to be confused with  The Blockchain Africa Conference 2019 which occurred in April — will be held from July 3 to July 4, and the theme is ’Africa 4.0:  Preparing Africa for the 4th Industrial Revolution.’ The conference topics will reportedly include fintech, payment systems, and the future of education.

President Museveni reportedly supported the use of blockchain technology in Uganda during his inaugural speech. Museveni is said to have cited four economic areas that he believes should be supported by blockchain technology: agriculture, manufacturing and processing, services, and the ICT sector.

This resistance line at 0.43$ is really blocking us since weeks now. We have to wait and see when the market will have the power to break it or if we will see an important correction taking place from it. The Steem is really controlled in this range since weeks by a whale I supposed and without a break out, I don’t expect any big move.

Steemit Statistics & Big Data: ? End of May 2019 Update ?

Thanks to ALL of you, Steemit is still alive, stabilizing and preparing for the next Bull Run !

We reached 13.19 mn visits in May 2019!

There is an important difference between total visitors to a site and unique ones. In this case the 13.19mn include the multiple times a person visited the website.

Therefore, as a good Steemian you probably connect everyday which will make you count for a total of 30 visits.

Therefore, how many “unique users” does Steemit has?

This is a very important question that I will try to answer later on. According to the Beta Analysis from the website I use to compile these datas, it is around 7,69mn (vs c.7mn last month) !

One quick word about the Methodology

  • Datas can come from multiple sources listed in the end of this post
  • These sources get their raw datas from companies working with them and sharing their datas in order to get access to competitor’s ones, browsers add-ons, in-app softwares which allow the Big Data to have a very large panel of users (north of 20mn) in order to statistically have the number of users/visits…
  • I use these raw datas to make excels tables, graphs…

I] Traffic

Daily Steemit Traffic

In January 2018, we experienced the best daily numbers at 1.5mn+; they decreased a little under 1.5mn in February.
Unfortunately the daily traffic on Steemit slowed down to c.400 000 in December 2018. Let’s hope it is just a little setback
In April 2019, the average daily traffic was closer to 450k per day. In May it increased a little more.
Another, explanation could be that people spend more time on apps (Partiko, Steepshot, Dtube, Steemmonster, eSteem…) which are not accounted in this analysis.

Numbers are still low BUT it is improving (stabilizing would be more accurate) since January 2018 !

Steemit website is ranked 5,316 worldwide. In April, it was sitting at 5,325.
Steemit kept on deteriorating its ranking as it ranked 1400+ last year.

Google Trends

Google Trend is an Indice based on 100, which means that 100 represents the week when most people searched for “Steemit” on Google.

Google Trends are still very low but there is hope as Bitcoin Google Trend is increasing again, maybe more crypto users joining decentralized platforms?

Bitcoin Google Trend Graph

Steemit Traffic share by country

In the Top 5, the strongest traffic increase came from Venezuela with +9.75% visits!

Mobile Traffic is increasing compared to last month as it represents 50.1% of the total

This is increasing as it was only c.42% in January 2019

This is useful to know how people use the Steem platform. Initiatives like Partiko (mobile app), eSteem (mobile app), Busy.org, SteepShot (Instagram), Zappl (Twitter like), utopian-io…, TIMM will probably help the community to grow on mobile phones.

Be Careful with the Number of Visits

Also, remember that if you connect from a different device (home/work computer, mobile phone, tablet) you will count as a “new visitor” on each of these devices.

So as an example, let’s say you connected at home, at work and in the subway. You would represent 3 visits out of these 1mn+ Daily Visits.

II] Marketing Mix

Organic Search is once again improving and represents 65,6% of the incoming Traffic.
Organic search is when people research on Google. As the number of quality bloggers on Steemit increase, our content has a higher probability of being listed in Google’s Top results.

Different Channels:

Direct: When you type in you Web browser www.steemit.com
Mail: When you connect to steemit.com through an e-mail link
Referrals: When you connect to steemit.com through a link found on another website (github…)
Social: When you connect to Steemit through a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram… page or link
Organic Search: When you type a search term like “Crypto” on Google and you click on one of the following steemit link proposed to you

Traffic Share Evolution since inception of this analysis

The Organic Search Strategy which means the Content Strategy is working as people come across Steemit looking for Crypto, Blog, Travel, etc… related articles.

Referring Social Pages

Youtube represents 30,7% of all the social platform incoming traffic. Reddit is also a strong source of new visits on the Steemit Platform. Last month, Facebook was the first Social Media to bring traffic to Steemit.com with a 33.1% contribution.

5 most searched terms on Google that leads to Steemit.com

To be honest, I don’t really get how some of these requests lead you to Steem but… it does.

What are Steemians main interests?

Gender Demographics

Age Distribution

III] Steemit website metrics

You feel a bit confused about these 3 metrics? Let me explain.

  • Bounce Rate is the % of people that leave the Website after just navigating on a single Webpage. The lower, the Better
  • Daily Pageviews per Visitor is the average number of pages a visitor opens. The Higher, the Better
  • Daily Time on Site is the full time a visitor spend on the website before closing the internet Webpage. The Higher the Better

My assumptions for May 2019

  • Total visits to Steemit.com: 13,19mn
  • Assumption of Total unique visitors in January: 6.7-7.2mn
  • Total Daily visitors: 380-400k

? BIS Wants ‘Level Playing Field’ for Banks Amid Threat from Facebook

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), often described as the bank for central banks, has issued its annual report for 2019, expressing concerns over the expected disruption as big tech firms like Facebook enter the financial space.

While titled “Big tech in finance: opportunities and risks,” the report looks at the risks and challenges posed by companies such as Alibaba, Amazon, Facebook, Google and Tencent, rather than paying lip service to the potential benefits of this building fintech revolution.

These firms have developed huge customer bases, says BIS, and have the benefit of a “data-network-activities loop” which gives them ” the potential to become dominant.”

While the encroach of such companies into payments, money management, insurance and lending has only just started, it brings the potential for major change in the finance industry.

? Facebook’s Libra Cryptocurrency: Bad for Privacy, Bad for Competition

Allowing Facebook to mint its own coin, the Libra, would turn it into the greatest anti-competitive trust case in history. It would make the early 20th century Morgans or Rockefellers seem downright competitive.

Even before it unveiled its vision for a global cryptocurrency this month, Facebook was already a near-monopoly in social media, and part of a duopoly in its main markets. Together with Google, it controls 82% of the digital advertising market.

In the past, Facebook has purchased any company that threatened it, e.g. Instagram and WhatsApp. And, when it spots a company that won’t sell itself or would be difficult to purchase, it uses the “embrace, enhance and extinguish” technique.

? Bitcoin on Track for Best Second Quarter Price Gain on Record

Bitcoin’s 165 percent gain so far this quarter is the best second quarter performance on record and the highest quarterly percentage gain since the end of 2017. The stellar gains have bolstered the long-term bullish technical setup.

While the relative strength index is reporting overbought conditions, there are no signs of bullish exhaustion on the daily, 3-day or weekly charts. As a result, the outlook remains bullish with resistances lined up at $11,247 and $11,394, according to Bitstamp data.

A minor pullback to $10,000 could be seen if the price again fails to hold onto gains above $11,000, validating a more bearish setup on the 4-hour chart.

The bullish outlook would be invalidated if the price finds acceptance below $9,097 (May 30 high).

? Crypto Analyst Says Bitcoin Price Could Hit $100,000 During Next Bull Run

ThinkMarkets chief market analyst Naeem Aslam predicts that bitcoin (BTC) will hit somewhere between $60,000 and  $100,000 during its next bull run, according to a Fox Business interview on June 24.

Aslam had previously predicted on June 17 that BTC would hit $10,000 in “a couple of weeks,” citing institutional involvement as a major driver. Bitcoin successfully reached the five figure mark on June 22, marking a record high that has not been seen in over one year.

According to Aslam, the major price points to look out for now are $20,000 and $50,000. He argues that by hitting $20,000, discussion will move from conservative estimates exceeding the number one cryptocurrency’s all-time high to forecasts of $50,000; from there, breaking $50,000 will move the price target to $100,000.

? President of Uganda to Lead Blockchain Conference in Kampala in July

Here is the current chart :

As predicted yesterday, we went touch the resistance line at around 0.43$. However, we had an immediate rejection from the market as you can see with the several red candles. So yeah this first try was no a success. We are now progressing again and trying to break back the resistance line at 0.41$. Let’s see when it will be done if we will be able to break the 0.43 resistance line with a second attempt.

? A Monumental Fight Over Facebook’s Cryptocurrency Is Coming

Given how slowly Washington lawmakers have taken to devise a coherent, informed view of cryptocurrency, the Chair of the House Financial Services Committee’s rapid leap to action last week over Facebook’s ambitious Libra project was remarkably fast.

But let’s reflect not on the details of Rep. Maxine Waters’ (D-Calif.) urgent requests that  Facebook to cease work on Libra until after hearings are held or on how European lawmakers made similar appeals. The important takeaway from these legislators’ actions is that they are able to make such demands at all. since this is not the case with truly decentralized projects.

Unlike with bitcoin, representative in Congress can directly identify and talk to the people in charge of the Libra project. They can subpoena them and, thus, pressure them. They might start with David Marcus, head of Facebook subsidiary Calibra, but, ultimately, it’s Facebook

? Two Israeli Brothers Arrested for Hack of Bitfinex Crypto Exchange

Two Israeli brothers have been arrested in connection with the hack of cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex and other crypto-related phishing attacks, finance news outlet Finance Magnates reports on June 23.

An Israeli police spokesperson reportedly told Finance Magnates that Eli Gigi and his younger brother Assaf Gigi netted tens of millions of dollars. The two are suspected of being responsible for long-term systematic theft of cryptocurrencies by maliciously obtaining access to other users’ accounts.

The two allegedly created credential-stealing clones of major online cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets and sent links to those phishing sites on Telegram groups and other cryptocurrency-related communities. The two are also accused of being responsible for the 2016 Bitfinex hack, which saw multiple accounts being compromised.

? Why Ethereum’s Privacy Matters and What’s Being Built to Support It

Mixers. Computational data layers. Zero-knowledge proofs: these are just a few of the technologies being leveraged to enhance privacy on the ethereum blockchain.

Privacy for a public blockchain network is a bit of an oxymoron, given that, by nature of the technology’s design, data must be shared and widely distributed on the network in order to be considered valid. What’s more, for a high-profile public blockchain network like ethereum, several blockchain analytics websites and data scraping services exist to proliferate this data beyond just the users of the network.

Itamar Lesuisse, the CEO and co-founder of crypto wallet tool Argent, describes the matter of privacy on the ethereum blockchain as an issue for even “the most simplest use case” on the platform.

? Firm Behind Zcash to Introduce New Version of Protocol With Sharding

The Electric Coin Company (ECC), the firm behind second-biggest anoncoin zcash (ZEC), intends to build a new scalable zcash blockchain, cryptocurrency news outlet Forklog reports on June 22.

Per the report, chief engineer at ECC Nathan Wilcox said that the firm should “make Zcash usable by 10 billion people by 2050” if it can. Still, Decrypt notes that achieving this would require zcash’s blockchain to be able to manage thousands — or millions — of transactions per second.

Forklog states that ECC is considering implementing sharding, a scalability solution that Ethereum devs also plan to integrate into that network in the near future.

? Craig Wright Failed to Disclose Bitcoin Holdings in Court Case, Says Lawyer

The legal counsel for a plaintiff in a bitcoin (BTC) theft case involving Australian computer scientist Craig Wright, said that Wright — the defendant — failed to disclose his bitcoin holdings per court order. Devin Freedman of law firm Boies Schiller Flexner made his statements in a tweet on June 21.

As Cointelegraph previously reported, in May a United States court ordered Wright to produce a list of his public bitcoin addresses as of Dec. 31, 2013. Freedman declared that, since he has not complied, “he remains under an order to show cause why [Judge Florina] Reinhart shouldn’t issue sanctions” and order him to appear before Judge Beth Bloom and “explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt.”

The order is part of an ongoing case against Wright — who self claims to be bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto — that was filed by the estate of David Kleiman.

After the support line at 0.39$ saved yesterday, I said you in my publication of yesterday that I was waiting that we will break the resistance line at 0.41$ to confirm the change of trend. It is now done as we broke this resistance line some hours ago. We are now going in the direction of the next resistance line at around 0.43$. This resistance line is very important for the future as it is blocking us since weeks now. Let’s see how the market will react when we will touch it.

? Facebook Unveils Libra Cryptocurrency, Targeting 1.7 Billion Unbanked

You don’t have to have a Facebook account to use Libra.

That’s the hands-off approach the social media giant is working toward as it announces its new blockchain and the token of the same name that will run on top of it.

While Tuesday’s announcement is still early days, the scope of the project is far-reaching. It includes a new Facebook subsidiary, Calibra, and an independent consortium, Libra Association, backed by some of tech’s biggest names.

“Implied in this project is that wherever the Visa or Mastercard logo are accepted, Libra would follow suit,” Dante Disparte, head of policy and communications for the Libra Association, told CoinDesk in an exclusive interview. “In so many ways it’s a great leap forward for cryptocurrencies and, in many respects, a mainstreaming of this asset class.”

? Global Banking Giant HSBC Launches Tokenization-Based Receivables System for India

Major global banking group HSBC has implemented tokenization technology into its receivables infrastructure for corporate clients in India, according to an announcement on June 18.

The British multinational financial services company has reportedly launched its Digital Accounts Receivable Tool (HSBC DART), based on tokenization technology developed by Australian blockchain-powered Fintech company Identitii Ltd., the firm said in the announcement.

According to the statement, HSBC DART was developed for HSBC’s Global Liquidity and Cash Management (GLCM) business and deploys Identitii’s approach to tokenization within HSBC’s existing infrastructure of receivables to enhance involved processes.

? Libra White Paper Shows How Facebook Borrowed From Bitcoin and Ethereum

With the long-awaited Libra white paper, Facebook is showing off its blockchain smarts, and making a bid for crypto credibility.

Released Tuesday morning, the 29-page paper describes a protocol designed to evolve as it powers a new global currency. More than a year in the making, the document opens by trumpeting the new blockchain’s ambitious goal:

“The Libra Blockchain is a decentralized, programmable database designed to support a low-volatility cryptocurrency that will have the ability to serve as an efficient medium of exchange for billions of people around the world.”

? Fidelity-Backed Crypto Analytics Firm to Integrate Twitter-Based Crypto Sentiment Feed

Crypto analytics firm Coin Metrics partnered with Social Market Analytics (SMA) to collaborate on a feed of real-time sentiment towards cryptocurrency based on social media data, according to a press release on June 17.

The new partnership intends to collect and analyze data posted by crypto community on social media in order to provide a new tool to help crypto traders to track social media sentiment data to build their portfolio strategies.

The new product will initially target sentiment data solely on social media giant Twitter, Coin Metrics CEO Tim Rice confirmed to Cointelegraph, adding that the firms are currently not considering integration of the service into Facebook.

? India asks WhatsApp to fingerprint messages to ensure traceability

India has asked WhatsApp to digitally fingerprint every message sent on its platform without breaking its encryption, according to two senior government officials, as it seeks to ensure traceability of all content shared on the Facebook-owned messaging application.

WhatsApp should be able to identify where a message originated and how many people have read and forwarded it without having to read the message, the officials said. The government has been insistent in its demand for traceability of WhatsApp messages after misinformation and rumours around child kidnappings on the platform led to a spate of lynchings across India in 2018.

Fingerprinting WhatsApp messages will help find the originator of the message. That is all we want,” the official cited above told ET.

The support line at 0.41$ was not strong enough and I was already warning you yesterday that we could break it durin any little correction on the BTC, which has been the case today. So the next support line is around 0.395$ and we could go test that support line before having a bounce and trying to go back upper than 0.41$. Let’s see how the BTC will impact us also in this scenario.

? Santander Loses Appeal Against Brazilian Crypto Exchange, Fine Upheld

Major Spanish bank Santander has been denied an appeal regarding a decision by the Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo in a case against crypto exchange Mercado Bitcoin, Cointelegraph Brazil reports on June 17.

Santander was sued by the Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin in 2018, after the bank purportedly closed the exchange’s account at its sole discretion. The bank, which has branches in Latin America, cited concerns over the origin of the account’s fund due to the nature of the crypto exchange’s activities.

Over 1 million reals (around $350,000) were locked, but the court subsequently ordered Santander to free the funds. Additionally, the bank must pay a monthly fine equal to 1% interest for the funds that were locked; this reportedly comes out to over 200,000 reals ($51,000).

? Ripple Could Invest Up to $50 Million in MoneyGram in XRP Boosting Deal

Blockchain payments startup Ripple has struck a deal to buy a stake in money transfer giant MoneyGram, the companies announced Monday.

Under the deal, according to the Wall Street Journal and Fortune, Ripple will spend $30 million to buy shares at a price of $4.10 apiece. And in the next two years, MoneyGram has the option to sell an additional $20 million worth of shares to Ripple at the same price. As noted by the Journal, MoneyGram shares were trading at about $1.45 apiece at the close of day, meaning Ripple’s purchase price is close to three times the current market value.

Notably, the deal will also see MoneyGram utilizing the digital token XRP as part of its day-to-day operations by way of Ripple’s xRapid transaction product. MoneyGram said that it was piloting the token back in January 2018, as CoinDesk reported at the time.

The social media giant is set to unveil its very own stablecoin, reportedly called GlobalCoin on Tuesday, June 17, with a launch to follow in 2020.

Binance.com bars US customers

Binance.com, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by trading volume, updated its terms of use on June 14 to exclude all users in the U.S.

The announcement led to a sharp sell-off in Binance’s very own native asset, Binance Coin (BNB). The price of BNB fell 12.8 percent to 25,209 satoshis (a satoshi being 0.00000001 of a BTC) on Friday, and hit a one-month low of 34,906 satoshis on Sunday.

Litecoin approaches ‘halving’ event

The upcoming litecoin (LTC) halving, set to trigger on August 5, 2019, will cut the reward gained from mining the cryptocurrency by half, meaning LTC will become a more scarce asset overall.

”Halvings’ as they are known, typically result in an overall boost in value for the crypto markets, as the assets themselves become harder to obtain and therefore increase in value.

? Private Blockchain’s Biggest Startups Integrate in Unprecedented Tie-Up

A historic change in strategy is taking place at R3 and Digital Asset (DA), who are now collaborating to maximize their respective blockchain ecosystems.

Announced Tuesday, DA will be bringing its smart contract language DAML (Digital Asset Modelling Language) to R3’s Corda platform, as well as Hyperledger Fabric, following on from its Hyperledger Sawtooth tie-up last month.

DA co-founder Yuval Rooz had a tough act to follow, taking over as CEO from Wall Street legend Blythe Masters, who suddenly departed the company in December of last year.

He told CoinDesk:
“Since I’ve taken over, we have had integration announcements with Sawtooth and VMWare, and what you are seeing now is a continuation of that strategy. Ledger providers see an opportunity to bring more business to their ledger because DAML allows developers to build applications much faster.”

? Parity builds Zebra to make it easy for developers to build on Zcash

Parity, the blockchain infrastructure company building on top of Ethereum–and its rival, Polkadot– has turned its hand to revamping Zcash’s inner workings.

A new Zcash client, called Zebra, was released today, designed to help make it easier for developers to write code on the network. In particular, this Zcash client has been written in the Rust programming language—whereas the original Zcash client was written in C++, since it was derived from bitcoin’s codebase. Rust is generally seen as a safer way to code applications. While it is less commonly used than C++, it is far more popular.

I’m considering that the resistance line at 0.41$ has been broken and that it is now a support line. Howerver, the break is not perfect and the market is hesitating a lot. The ideal scenario would be to go break now the next resistance line at 0.43$ to confirm that UP trend so let’s see but i’m staying very carefull about that support line at 0.41$ that we could break down very quickly in case of small correction on the BTC.

? Above $9.3K: Bitcoin’s Price Prints 13-Month High

The price of bitcoin (BTC) hit a 13-month high above $9,300 on Sunday.

The leading cryptocurrency by market capitalization rose to $9,381 at  05:55 UTC – the highest price since May 10, 2018, according to CoinDesk’s Bitcoin Price Index.

BTC was last seen trading at $9,250 representing 6.4 percent gains on the day. On a month-to-date basis, the cryptocurrency is up 8 percent.

? Concerns Over Facebook Data Use Derailed at Least 3 Crypto Partnerships

Facebook’s GlobalCoin project, also known as Project Libra, may face significant hurdles as the social media giant works toward a prospective launch.

Despite reports that Facebook is gearing up to reveal its new cryptocurrency as early as next week, a source with knowledge of Facebook’s operations said the project’s software has a long way to go until it can be used. Sources attribute the delay to blockchain industry incumbents being reluctant to work on a project that doesn’t appear to have the hallmarks of a true cryptocurrency.

One source estimated that early 2020 would be a more realistic timeframe for testing, so any imminent announcements would merely be forward-looking plans.

? Bitmain Lawsuit Seeks Millions from Staffers Who Founded Rival Mining Pool

The Takeaway

Bitmain is suing three former employees who started Poolin, a rival to the chip manufacturer’s BTC.com mining pool.

The company is seeking $4 million in damages, alleging the Poolin co-founders violated their non-compete agreements; The former employees say Bitmain voided the non-compete by failing to pay them on time as agreed.

The case offers a rare window on Bitmain’s inner-workings and employment practices.

? 5 South Korean Crypto Exchanges Take On New Responsibility for User Losses

Five cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea have increased their liability to users in line with demands from regulators. Local English-language news outlet The Korea Herald reported the news on June 17, citing Yonhap News Agency.

A year after the Fair Trade Commission requested Bithumb and four other platforms to adapt their policy, the companies will now hold themselves accountable in the event of user funds being stolen.

The onus for paying out will lie with the exchanges even if no willful or gross negligence occurred on their part, The Korea Herald stated.

South American online marketplace Mercado Libre is working with Facebook on the social network’s Libra cryptocurrency project, Cointelegraph Brazil reports on June 14.

A MercadoLibre executive told Cointelegraph Brazil that the purported cryptocurrency will be integrated into the e-commerce platform as a form of payment. While the anonymous executive confirmed the partnership, further details were not forthcoming.

The executive stated that it was likely the company would operate as a node in Facebook’s purportedly forthcoming blockchain network.

Mercado Libre is one of the most popular e-commerce platforms in South America with operations in 19 countries.
