Village Farms International Is…Almost A Buy

Village Farms International, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, produces, markets, and distributes greenhouse-grown tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers in North America. But in 2017, the company partnered with Emerald Health Therapeutics, a Canada-based, medical-marijuana research company and formed a 50-50 joint venture called Pure Sunfarms.

Because Village Farms International is still known as a produce grower the valuation is almost half those of other companies in the cannabis started.  But behind the scenes, they are converting their greenhouses to produce cannabis.  And what I didn’t know is the company has one of the lowest cost / gram equating to very good margins.  Thus, it only makes sense that the company had three straight quarters of recorded a profit with an avg. profit margin exceeding 20%.

Village Farms also has a hand in the hemp sector, so they have expansion opportunities in the US with the passing for the Farm Bill I 2018.

The 2018 farm bill, which legalized industrial hemp cultivation, has opened up new opportunities for cannabidiol (CBD) extraction in the U.S. that otherwise weren’t available to producers. Village Farms is looking to test the waters in this regard, initially growing and selling hemp biomass, as well as CBD oil on the wholesale market to boost its near-term cash flow. To do this, the company also has a separate hemp-based joint venture which includes over 920 acres across four states. Village Farms also expects to eventually sell CBD products directly to major retailers sometime in 2020. While there isn’t too much to say about this hemp joint venture considering the lack of significant financial results, it will be interesting to see just how successful its initial hemp/CBD efforts will be.

Village Farms offer investors an opportunity to come into the cannabis space through the back door.  While other companies have been overhyped and haven’t been able to deliver, Village Farms is slowing starting to flex their muscles in the cannabis space.  And I particularly like their medical marijuana research company because in the future, the marijuana will be a low margin commodity.  So how should potential investors get into the stock, lets go to the charts.

Well, price did react to the daily demand at $9.60, but there are no more unfilled buy orders at that level.

Thus, the next stack of unfilled buy orders are at the daily demand at $6.50.

I bought $SQ today, Long

I bought some shares of Square Inc. $SQ today. I have liked this stock since it was in the teens, and I missed the first boat. I am not going to miss this one. This stock has pulled back to major support and has essentially gone nowhere since Q1 of 2018. It is now going sideways and this is how you buy the bottom folks.

If it doesn’t hold major support and drops it longer than 48 hours then you sell. If it does, then we are in some business.

Ever since I saw those iPads I knew this was going to be big. Now it is the best and easiest place to buy bitcoin. Bullish!

Is it Hammer Time Folks? $QQQ $SPX

We saw some major buying off the lows today ladies and gents. A lot of names were holding tight and have now put in some hammers. Does this resolve higher and is this a buying opportunity? Time will tell. All I am saying is do not be bearish because the media is bearish. Yes growth is slowing but can we rip to all time highs? Definitely.

We are one tweet away from all time highs and tech ripping higher. It’s hard to be MEGA bearish above a rising 200 day MA which you can clearly see, that is where we are right now.

Are You Ready For 5G??? – Part 6

5G ((short for 5th Generation) is the next generation of mobile communication. 5G brings three new aspects to the table: greater speed (to move more data), lower latency (to be more responsive), and the ability to connect a lot more devices at once (for sensors and smart devices). 5G will be a whole new kind of network, enabling new experiences that will change how we live, work, and play.

Equity analysts Kyle McNealy and George Notter have just come out with a recommendation for investors to buy Apple, and a target for shares to rise to $260. They say Wall Street fails to appreciate how much the company stands to benefit from fifth generation cellular network technology, which basically promises faster data connection

“In our view, current expectations for Apple’s first 5G iPhone lineup are too low. They underestimate Apple’s competitive position for 5G devices,” they said.

They expect better iPhone sales than Wall Street, where current consensus forecasts call for 190 million iPhone units sold in fiscal year 2021 — seen as a big year for 5G devices. That’s 9% below the 6-year unit shipment average for iPhone product cycles, said the analysts, who expect sales of 208 million for 2021.

But this post isn’t about Apple, it’s about Viavi Solutions.

While widespread 5G use isn’t a household name yet, engineers are beginning to move parts and subsystems into characterization, validation, production, and deployment.  And that were Viavi Solutions comes into play.

Viavi Solutions Inc. provides network test, monitoring, and assurance solutions to communications service providers, enterprises, network equipment manufacturers, civil government, military, and avionics customers worldwide.  And it just so happens to be 1 of 2 players in the space that makes 5G testing gear.

Viavi Solutions Inc. announced their first quarter earnings a couple of weeks ago.   Viavi Solutions Inc raised their revenue guidance from a range of $273 million to $293 million to a range of $282 million to $294 million; and raised their earning per share guidance from a range of 14-16 cents to a range of 15-17 cents.  In addition, the company approved a stock repurchase program for up to $200 million of the company’s common stock.

So if you believe in 5G, here’s an opportunity to ride the wave with a company with only a 3.5 billion market cap.  So how does one get on board, well lets go to the charts. The weekly demand at $13 is all used up,

so if price gets down to the weekly demand at $10.50, the chart suggests to take it long.

Will The Russell 2000 Finally Join The Party???

On Tuesday the Fed Powell
will discuss US monetary policy and on Weds will announce whether he is keeping
interest rates on hold or dropping them.  In July Fed Powell lowered interest rates for
the first time in a decade.  Wall Street
is expecting the same on Weds, pricing in an 86% chance of a quarter-basis
point cut.

If the US equity markets are going to continue their climb higher, the Russell 2000 must fall inline.  The Russell 2000 index represents the largest 2000 small cap public companies in the US.  But in recent months the Russell 2000 have been stubborn to rise with the DOW, NASDAQ and S&P 500 as indicated by the green line.

Source

Usually towards the end of the business cycle, rising interest rates hurt smaller companies the most because they have a higher debt to earnings ratio and lower free cash flow relative to much larger companies.  Also, smaller companies are more volatile and tend to react and respond to changes in economic conditions and changes in investor sentiment first. However, if rates are going to continue to get cut, that should help the Russell 2000 to finally join the party. And based on the Russell 2000 outpacing its friends last week, I think it things a rate cut is already “money in the bag.”

Source

The iShares Russell 2000 ETF, which tracks the Russell 2000 Index of stocks with smaller market capitalizations, saw its largest weekly inflows in nearly a year during the week that ended September 6. Those inflows totaled $1.5 billion and followed a $340 million inflow during the final days of August. Since bottoming out on August 27, the iShares ETF has rallied nearly 9% compared to the S&P 500’s gain of 5% over the same period.

There is the possibility that the resurgence could be longer lasting if the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut at the end of July is more than just a one-off and marks the beginning of a rate-cutting cycle.

Judging by history, further rate cuts would be supportive of small-cap equities. During the first year following the start of a Fed rate-cut cycle, small caps have risen on average 28% compared with just 15% for large caps, according to investment banking firm Jeffries, per the FT.

Thus the chart suggests the two levels to monitor above price are the daily supply at $1630 and $1665.

Esports & Gaming News

Video game loot boxes should be classed as gambling, says Commons (The Guardian)

  • A House of Commons committee has advised that loot boxes should be regulated as gambling and banned for children.
  • The recommendation features as part of the DCMS report on immersive and addictive technologies and states that games featuring loot boxes that are paid for with real money (as opposed to earned as in-game rewards) should be marked as containing gambling and age-rated accordingly.
  • The report also touched on the concerning rise of deepfake videos, urging the government to include them as part of the duty of care principles for social media firms laid out in the online harms white paper.

Analysis and Comments

  • The most obviously impacted franchise would be EA’s FIFA, as Ultimate Team would presumably be captured by this proposal.
  • While not a helpful line for the broader industry, the regulatory overhang regarding loot boxes is not really news. Loot boxes are already banned in Belgium, which has resulted in several games being pulled from the market (as the only alternative would have been to obtain a gambling license).
  • In this case, the effectiveness of the measures will presumably be determined by their enforcement, as the rules could be easily flouted if parents or other adults allow their bank details to be used for under 18 year olds to purchase these type of features.
  • The country’s gaming trade body (UK Interactive Entertainment) said they would review the recommendations and “consult with the industry on how we demonstrate further our commitment to player safety – especially concerning minors and vulnerable people”. The government said it “will consider the committee’s report carefully before responding”.

Overwatch League, Nielsen Release AMA Viewership Data (The Esports Observer)

  • After entering a deal in April 2018, Activision Blizzard and Nielsen have now released viewership figures (average-minute-audience) on the Overwatch League (OWL) for the first time.
  • The data compares digital streams last year vs. digital streams and linear broadcast this year, showing that the OWL averaged 313k viewers globally and 95k in the US, an annual increase of 18% and 34% increase, respectively.
  • Notably, the median age of OWL is 24, which according to Nielsen data is far younger than the other leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, the PGA Tour, and college football and basketball) which underscores the reach/impact esports have with younger demographics.

Analysis and Comments

  • The viewership figures are the most important metric when assessing an esport’s success; however, because companies and the media often provide different types of viewership figures with poor context, it is often unclear what thesenumbers actually mean.
  • As a result, streaming viewership is still often difficult to compare with traditional TV ratings, and previous attempts to do so have inflated the success of esports in problematic ways.
  • Activision Blizzard’s partnership with Nielsen is a big step in the right direction in establishing more usable and consistent metrics that will help better inform investors’ decisions (and will give them more confidence in the data).
  • Nielsen has been steadily growing its presence in the space and signed a deal with Riot Games earlier this year to measure League of Legends’ esports viewership – something we view as an exciting development as League is the world’s largest esport and has recently started introducing the franchise model to its national leagues as well.

Ethical Stock Investment To Launch On New York Stock Exchange

Ethical Stock Investment To Launch On New York Stock Exchange (PlantbasedNews)

  • Beyond Investing is launching the US Vegan Climate Exchange Traded Fund (VGN ETF) on the New York Stock Exchange on September 10th.
  • The ETF is targeted at vegans looking for climate-conscious investments and is constructed by taking “the Solactive US Large Cap index (a proxy for the S&P 500 Index) and [excluding] any stocks whose activities are incompatible with a vegan and climate-conscious approach to investing, replacing damaging stocks with midcap alternatives that meet its ethical criteria.”

Analysis and Comments

  • Flows to ESG and sustainability-focused funds have spiked this year, as investors continue to focus on the investment opportunities that address issues such as climate change, (plastics) pollution, or gender pay disparities.
  • Therefore, you should expect to see continued growth in the number of investment instruments focused on these issues, particularly as worries around uncompetitive “stranded assets” intensify.

Nearly 200 CEOs just agreed on an updated definition of “the purpose of a corporation”

Nearly 200 CEOs just agreed on an updated definition of “the purpose of a corporation” (Quartz)

  • Nearly 200 CEOs in the US, including companies such as Apple, Bayer, BP, Deere, JPM and Abbott (all members of the “Business Roundtable”) released a new Purpose of a Corporation statement this week.
  • The new statement shifted from being focused exclusively on creating shareholder value to a much broader remit including all stakeholders such as employees, communities, suppliers and customers. The full statement can be found here.
  • The Business Roundtable is made up of America’s most influential corporate leaders and has periodically issued Principles of Corporate Governance since 1978, with each version since 1997 having historically endorsed the principle of shareholder primacy.

Analysis and Comments

  • One of the questions we get on ESG is whether this time it is different or whether companies are just paying lip-service to investor demands for more ESG focused strategy.
  • The above development is evidence that there is a structural shift within the corporate world. This is significant. America’s largest companies are effectively saying shareholders are nolonger a priority and that a much broader set of goals will be put in place treating other stakeholders on the same level. It’s no longer just about profit. Will be interesting to hear Trump’s thoughts….
  • Out of 189 members of the Business Roundtable, only Alcoa, Blackstone, GE, Kaiser Permanente, NextEra, Parker Hannifin and State Farm failed to sign up.

Real Estate Continues to Push Towards ALL TIME HIGHS

Real Estate has been relentless. During a time where NOTHING seems to be going anywhere in the US sectors and the global growth is SLOWING, Real Estate continues to push forward. I am looking at Real Estate at least testing the 94 area from the 2008 highs before pulling back. More Upside to Come.

Speaking of, I am selling my house now if you are in the market ?

Can US Equities Hold the World Up? Doubting it…

Global growth has been slowing for a while now. Many countries are making lower highs across the board and look awful with even worse incoming data. Yields are crashing. And the only thing left are US Equities. How long can they keep the world a float?

The Vix is sitting at 19 and has built a sideways base. This matches the bear flag of all the indices off the most recent highs. If the bulls have a chance, then they SMASH the Vix like they have the past 4 years to under 16. If the Vix spike, the equity bulls will be few and far between and a liquidity issue will be on our hands for the first time in a few years I am afraid.

Vix over 25 and you will start seeing air pockets. Let’s hope the bulls can hold the line.
