Agetech could transform the care industry

Agetech
could transform the care industry (FT)

  • According
to two chief executive of technology companies, Age-tech, i.e. applications of technology designed to address
issues faced by elderly people, are often left unexploited as they do not
    appeal to “kids doing start-ups”.
  • Age
tech start-up Birdie has designed a
system for care workers to digitise and
    keep track of notes
on elderly people living in care facilities. The
company has thus far raised €9.5m,
with more than 100 UK providers already using the tech.
  • Birdie
is also trialling a combination of static
    motion and sonar sensors
designed to pick up irregularities in behaviour
through machine learning that could indicate health issues.
  • Another
tech company (which remains unnamed) is targeting the steadily growing Alzheimer’s therapeutics market through specially
designed devices/toys that stimulate cognitive function.

Analysis and Comments

  • The author makes an important point towards the end of the article by highlighting that the typical customer for technology such as the above is likely to be an older person who is caring for an elderly relative.
  • As such, players in this space that aren’t exclusively targeting care facilities are in the tricky position of having to design solutions for the use of people who themselves might be similarly uncomprehending of thetech as their elderly charges (the article includes an example of a healthcare start-up which failed for that reason).
  • Last year was an interesting year for Age-tech, as it saw PointClickCare, a leading Canadian SaaS platform targeted at the long-term and post-acute care market, valued at a minimum of USD1bn following its latest funding round.
  • See here for a 2019 Age-tech market map including both listed and private players.

Nestle is betting on The “Healthy Food” and “Ecology” Trends !

Nestle
to sell a chocolate made without added sugar (CNBC)

  • Nestlé is about to launch a new 70% dark chocolate
bar, the “Cacao Fruit Chocolate”, which does not include any added
    sugar
    .
  • It
will be made from the cacao fruit only, with the white cacao pulp acting as a
natural, more sustainable and healthy sweetener. The new product will be
launched in Japan this autumn and is expected to be introduced globally by
    2020.
  • Another
100% cacao fruit juice with lime granita will be commercialised end of this
week at the KitKat Chocolatory Ginza Store. The two products will be sold at
    $3.7 and $6.93, respectively.
  • The company
is looking to patent the pulp mixture process
, which helps to reduce food waste, as it uses 31% of
the pod vs. the current 22%.

Analysis and Comments

  • You should expect a continued increase in product reformulations and product innovations along the lines of Nestlé’s most recent launch.
  • This is largely driven by a combination of pressure coming from both the public as well as a growing number of governments and regulators, the latter of which are increasingly aware of the strain that obesity & diabetes is putting on global healthcare systems.
  • Already, diabetes care forms 10-15% of healthcare budgets, and Healthcare analysts expect a near doubling of the number of diabetes patients by 2025, which risks bankrupting publically funded healthcare programmes in Europe and making health insurance increasingly unaffordable.

Nestlé develops recyclable paper packaging for Yes snack bars (SupplyChainDive)

  • Nestlé
    has developed a high-speed flow
    packaging technology
that allows paper to be used on a larger scale instead
of plastic films and laminates. As a result, Nestlé will sell its Yes snack
bars in a recyclable paper wrapper.
  • The
packaging, made of water-based coating and sustainable sources, is available in
13 countries and will be introduced in Europe and other locations going
    forward.
  • Nestlé
has been committed to make all its
product packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025
    , and other manufacturers
(e.g. PepsiCo, Nestlé, Mars) have launched recyclable packaging programs as
    well.
  • According
to Reuters, the company may also use paper packaging for its Kit Kat bars and
other products, once it is able to
supply sufficient amounts of the specially coated paper.

Analysis and Comments

  • As the article states, consumers’ demand for sustainable and environmental standards in the food industry has been increasing steadily, with a Nielsen survey from 2018 stating that 48% of U.S. consumers were likely to change their purchases to meet environmental standards.

Can Bulls Prevent a Knockout? Analyzing Bitcoin, LTC, ETH & Answering Your Questions

Bulls are still defending $10,000, but bears are attempting to land a knockout punch. Price dropped from $10,500 to $10,150 in less than 20 mins. Just another day in the crypto market.

Future EV Leaders are in “Emerging” Markets

China’s electric vehicle charging posts
exceed 1 mln (XinhuaNet)

  • The
number of charging points in China has risen to 1m (up 69% YoY).
  • At
the end of 2018 there were 760k charging points in China, up from 440k at end
    of 2017.

Analysis and Comments

  • Charging infrastructure is a lot more important than battery cost and subsidies in sustaining EV growth. The Chinese authorities are shifting their priorities from subsidizing EVs to financing the roll out of charging infrastructure.
  • The availability of high power/speed charging infrastructure will make short range EVs (~150miles) viable as your first car rather than your second one.
  • This is necessary, as battery costs are likely to bottom out at above $100/kWh which would make mass market EVs with long range commercially unaviable in the absence of subsidies.

Indian Cities Now Plan To Buy Thousands Of
Electric Buses (CleanTechnica)

  • Indian cities are planning to buy thousands of electric buses over the next few years.
  • In India, the government is spending $1.3bn on its electric bus programme and the funds will be used to subsidise 60% of the cost of the bus.

Analysis and Comments

  • Chinese bus OEMs such as BYD are the best placed to benefit from this opportunity, because they have a clear cost advantage versus bus OEMs in Europe and the US.
  • For the cobalt market (and hence Umicore), the bus market will also be important due to the shift in battery technology in buses from LFP to NMC which will boost cobalt demand.

Bitcoin: The Battle Rages On

Yesterday we discussed the potential for a bull trap. I told you if the breakout was a bull trap, it’d likely reject at $11,050. That’s exactly what happened. As of now, price is again trading within the prior area of consolidation around $10,400.

Bears executed a simple death cross (50 MA below 200 MA) on the 4 hour chart a few days ago. Since then, bulls have been fighting to prevent a follow through exponential death cross (50 EMA below 200 EMA) on the 4 hour chart.

Bitcoin Bulls Attempting a Breakout! Bears Fight for Control

Bitcoin continues to consolidate right below our $10,650 resistance. Price is getting squeezed within a tighter range. It looks like we should have resolution in the next 24 hours. We’re seeing a potential bullish ascending triangle, which would suggest a break to the upside to at least $11,050. Bears are struggling to confirm a 4 hour death cross on the 50 and 200 EMA. This truly is an interesting battle to watch.

After yesterday’s quick $1,200+ rise, bitcoin was met with tough resistance at $10,650. In my prior video I warned of a break down to retest $10,000. As of now, price dropped as low as $10,100 before finding support. It’s currently trading around $10,350.
